“At 49, I found out I had breast cancer completely unexpectedly. I had no symptoms—it was simply my fourth annual routine mammogram. I received my results through my patient portal in the middle of a workday and saw words I had never had to understand before. Everything I researched seemed to say one thing: cancer. I was terrified, and so was my family.
Then, women began coming out of the woodwork to reach out to me—some were old high school friends, and others were women who had walked their own breast cancer journeys, some at very young ages. They shared their stories, their diagnoses, their treatments, their fears, and their victories. They helped guide me through those first overwhelming weeks and gave me a sense of understanding and hope when I desperately needed it. I truly believe the Lord placed each of those women in my path exactly when I needed them.
He also placed an incredible team of physicians, nurses, CMAs, and caregivers at Duke in my path, and I will forever be grateful for the compassion and care they showed me throughout this journey.
There have been so many decisions to make—decisions I never imagined I would have to face—and some of them have been incredibly hard. But through it all, I have learned to lean into my faith, trust God, and take one step at a time.
In January 2026, I had a single mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy. Recently, I had my first mammogram since my diagnosis, and my results were clear. I am incredibly grateful.
My journey isn’t over, but today I am thankful, hopeful, and trusting the Lord with whatever comes next. ❤️” Submitted by survivor Tennille
